Fitness can be a major consideration when you are travelling.

Being on the go and wanting to make the most of your holiday time, it can be hard to fit in a workout. Between the fine food, funny sleep patterns and tendency to indulge, there has never been a more necessary time to stay on top of your exercise routine!

To maintain your fitness and still enjoy your travels, check out these 7 tips…

 

1: Keep It Short And Sweet

You don’t need to have a long workout to have an effective workout. Even sparing 10 minutes a day can really make a difference to your fitness. Choose a simple set of exercises that don’t require any equipment like push-ups, squats, sit-ups, or burpees. These exercises all work on strengthening your muscles as well as raising your heart rate.

Because the workout is so simple, it is hard to say no to.

 

2: Don’t Give Yourself A Choice

Procrastination is one of the biggest obstacles to exercise at any time. But it is ten times worse on holiday as there are a million other things you want to do instead.

But don’t let yourself quit.

By keeping to a simple, short exercise burst like the ones mentioned above, you don’t need to procrastinate. Why? Because it will be over and done with so quickly anyway.

It really helps to get into a morning routine where you get up, stretch, exercise, shower, and be set for the day!

 

3: Walk

This one is a really simple tip. If you have somewhere that you want to go, walk there. Taking the scenic route not only ups your fitness time, but it allows you to take in the sights and local culture around you. It is far easier to walk when you are on holiday than when you are at home and have a strict schedule to stick to.

Why not walk for gelato? Take a stroll around the public square, explore winding cobbled streets, or admire buildings, statues, cafes, and the light softly illuminating a city that is old to many, but new to you!

 

4: Take The Stairs… And Run!

As we explore new cities you will find lots of steps leading up bridges, stairs going up from underground metro stations, steps going up to a beautiful museum building, even steps up to your hotel room. Take the steps every time, and if you are feeling really energetic, run up them. Think of Rocky conquering those museum steps for motivation!  

 

5: Sprint It

Take the opportunity to sprint a couple of times a day. Maybe race the kids to a statue, sprint down a small alley for fun, or just pick a point that you want to be at and get to it as fast as you can. Use it is a form of play as opposed to forced exercise. You don’t need to go on long runs when you are travelling, but take the opportunity to sprint where you can. If you feel exhausted at the end of the day then you have done well.

 

6: Be Mindful And Not Overeat

You don’t have to always choose the healthiest foods on the menu, but moderation is the key. Have the pasta, the pizza, the bread, or the ice cream if you want to. Just eat mindfully and try not to overeat. Don’t stuff yourself so full that you can’t move, just enough to be comfortable.

 

7: Have Fun

The perfect opportunity to get active and have some fun is when you are travelling with kids. There is something enchanting about Mum or Dad skipping down the street holding onto their son or daughter’s hand. And less embarrassing too! Skip, dance, race, jump the cracks in the sidewalk, and generally just be a big kid. Not only is is oodles of fun, but it is a great way to get your body moving.
