When hiring a tradesman to do work around your home, you want to make sure that you are hiring a responsible professional. Watch out for these suspect phrases, as a professional would never say them.
1: I don’t have my qualifications on hand
Any worthy tradesman will easily be able to produce evidence of their qualifications and certifications.
2: I don’t have insurance
All tradesmen should have their own public liability insurance that protects you if any injury or damage occurs on your property.
3: It’s the best price in town!
There is probably a reason the rate is so cheap. If it seems too good to be true, then it probably is!
4: I don’t have contact details for my last client
If a tradesman can’t provide you with a client that can give them a good reference, then run very quickly in the opposite direction.
5: I ran out of letterhead
All quotes and invoices should be supplied on professional letterhead. Be cautious if they provide a handwritten scribble.
6: I don’t do contracts
If there isn’t a written agreement, then there isn’t an agreement at all!
7: I only accept cash in hand
All income must be declared and taxed accordingly. A tradesman who only does cash jobs could be dishonest in other areas too.
